State of the “art” computers

May 15, 2009 · Posted in Computers and Humour, The Future

Frankly I’m a bit disappointed!

My baseline year for this blog is 1985 when Microholics was published, and among other things, this blog examines how microcomputers have changed since then, (with, I hope, a seasoning of humour).

I devoted one section of the book to “The Future“. How would computers evolve as statements of art and design? How would they be tailored to niche cultural markets? And I was so full of hope that engineers and designers all over the world would take on the mantle of making computers look………well, interesting!

The Apple Corporation, bless ‘em, have tried with various products like their first iMac. But no one has taken a leap of faith or a flight of fancy and landed on anything really innovative. To prove my point, I’ve just done an image search on Google for “interesting computers” and tried a few variations on that theme. And to be brutally blunt - there’s absolutely sod-all there that grabbed me. If I’d found one you’d be looking at it now - or at least a link to it.

Come on guys! Let your imaginations run free. You could corner those niche markets. Here’s a couple of ideas for you:
