Algorithms and stuff

I’ve been stuck with a Google page ranking of 2 for ages on this blog. (That’s 2 out of a possible 10, by the way). Well that’s hardly surprising, is it? I’m not heavily into the old social-networking thing for a start. And I’m not actually doing much blogging, which must be a factor somewhere in the calculation! However, nobody, not even the CEO of Google knows how they calculate their rankings. It’s based on something called an algorithm, which even God is a little confused about. In fact, God’s own blog, (www.Mr.omniscient-AND-omnipotent.com) can only struggle to a ranking of 9, which, I guess, isn’t bad considering nobody reads it.

To get a ranking of 10 is actually impossible it would seem. The BBC front page, for example, which gets about 50 zillion hits a second can only reach 9. What’s more interesting is that Google’s own front page is lower, with a ranking of 8! All I can think is that the 10 ranking must be linked to some abstract unattainable state of awareness, a bit like nirvana or discovering the meaning of life.

So this enigmatic Google algorithm. I wonder what it is, what it looks like. I guess the cartoon which was my entry to the caption competition of the Cartoonists Club of Great Britain forum a couple of weeks ago could have some relevance to this mystery.
