On the blower

As these cartoons from Microholics get re-issued, (just to remind you, the book was published in 1985), I like to categorise them into those that have stood the test of time, and those that haven’t. And I always feel quite chuffed when the humour in the cartoon still has relevance today, such as this one which came in the Education section of the book.

OK. So the humorous element hasn’t dated so much, but what about the drawing?

There’s a couple of give-aways, aren’t there? For a start the computer on the desk looks a bit too chunky, with its all-in-one screen and keyboard. But look at the phone, with that funny round dial thing on the front! In 1985 speed-touch keyboard dialling phones had been around for a while, but had not completely taken over.

So why didn’t I draw a new-style phone? Well, from a convenience point of view, I’ll be honest, I was glad to see the back of those old slow dialling devices. But from an artistic perspective they were much more pleasing to draw. Even nicer were the very old ones which came in two pieces, one for the mouth and one for the ear, where you had to blow down the mouthpiece and crank a handle to get through to the exchange. A bit before my time, but I bet making a phone call in those days was a real adventure!
