O What Joy(sticks)!

“The Domestic Scene” is the title of the chapter in Microholics from which I’ve taken today’s cartoon.

joystick gag

The strange thing is, (and please tell me I’m not alone here), when I first heard the word “joystick” it conjured up a dildo-esque image in my head. (In fact, it’s been a bit of a mystery to me why those objects were not called joysticks from the beginning). Or maybe I’ve just got a dirty mind! This could be true. For example, when Stevie Wonder released “Uptight out of Sight” I was the only one among my friends who thought it sounded a bit saucy. Consider “uptight” as two separate words and you’ll see where I’m coming from.

There must be more examples only I can’t think of them right now. But I’d be extremely interested to hear from anyone who has misinterpreted an innocuous, innocent word or phrase in common usage, as having some not-so-innocent connotation. You can leave your comments below.

I was just about to put this blog to bed when I realised that what I’ve been rambling about has got a name. It’s called Sexual Innuendo. For a penetrating, firm and well-rounded critique of this phenomenon you could do worse than visit Uncyclopedia (the alternative to Wikipedia) to satisfy your curiosity.
